Cool gadget or environmental scourge? You decide.
Work, coffee, coffee maker, paper cups, trash, wasteMy new job has this awesome coffee maker. It brews single servings of coffee (and tea). You stick a little Green Mountain thingy that’s a little bigger than a single serve creamer into the coffee-maker, and it makes you a fresh cup of coffee. Unfortunately I can’t decide whether it’s environmentally friendly or not. On the one hand, it’s less wasteful because you’re brewing exactly as much coffee/tea as you’re going to drink, but on the other hand, you make a little bit of trash every time you brew a cup.
Until I can determine the (im)morality of this particular coffee maker, I brought in a mug from home so at least I am no longer using paper cups.
We had one of those machines when I was a grad assistant at RIT. It is definitely addicting. It’s also like coffee roulette because it didn’t show how full the cup reservoir was. I usually ended up being the lucky person that had to empty the cup reservoir.
I would be curious to see if the device is sucking up any power when in standby mode. If it is, then it’s definitely not good. I vote for drinking tea… Better for you, and better than this plastic cup machine.
